How to install Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC HD2? (Video)

Everyone can have Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC HD2 officially now. It will make your HTC HD2 to run Android operation system like HTC Desire HD while still having the old Windows Mobile operating system. And lot of great Android 2.2 Froyo ROMs can be chose to install. The best part ~ it is not hard to do so. You can do it on your own too. Prerequisites

  • SPL 3.03
  • Radio 2.15
  • Official HTC HD2 ROM v3.14
  • Android 2.2 Froyo ROM

If you are using old HTC HD2 Windows Mobile ROM like v1.48, v1.66 or v1.72, all you need to do ~ upgrade to latest official HTC HD2 ROM Version 3.14. Follow the video guide ~ How to upgrade Windows Mobile ROM on HTC HD2? if you don’t know to do so. Official HTC HD2 ROM version 3.14 will install SPL 3.03 and Radio 2.15 on your phone. And this makes Android working on HTC HD2.

I picked darkstone SuperRAM FroYo Android ROM in the guide because it is the fastest loading Android ROM yet. You can try out other Top 10 Android ROMs for HTC HD2 too. By the way, I use free 7-Zip (any unzip application like WinZip or WinRAR also can) to unzip the Android ROM.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Power off your phone.
  2. Press volume down button (don’t let go) and power on your phone.
  3. It will load into bootloader.
  4. You should get ‘Red, Green, Blue and White’ screen with SPL-3.03.
  5. Take off the battery.
  6. Power on your phone.
  7. You should see R 2.15.50.14 and D 3.14.xx at bottom of the screen with green HTC Logo.
  8. Connect USB cable from PC to phone after Windows Mobile loaded.
  9. Select ‘Disk Drive’ and click ‘Done’.
  10. Open removable disk (SD card storage) at PC.
  11. Open Android ROM zip with 7-Zip.
  12. Copy ‘Android’ and ‘Media’ folders to SD card.
  13. Disconnect USB cable from phone.
  14. Open ‘File Explorer’.
  15. Go to ‘Storage Card’.
  16. Select ‘Android’ folder.
  17. Click on ‘CLRCAD’ first. (note – nothing show up is normal)
  18. Then click on ‘HARET’. (just click ‘Yes’ if unknown publisher warning prompt up)
  19. First time Android loading will take around 1 – 2 minutes.
  20. Follow phone onscreen instructions to setup.
  21. That’s all.

Note – most of the Android ROMs come with ‘Android’ folder only. darkstone SuperRAM FroYo has extra ‘media’ folder. Some may have different names. But as long as you have all the prerequisites, your phone should be able to run android.

      • hi, i get the same thing. all the android builds that ive downloaded do the same thing. soo, what do i do? whats wrong with it? i have rom 2.13.531.1 would that have anything to do with it? and what are the prerequisites?

        • The prerequisites are in the post. Read it carefully. If this Android ROM cannot work on your phone, you might need to try out those which use HSPL. Just search at my blog, you will get all the information you need. πŸ˜‰

  3. So every time I restart the phone, it will go to Windows first, then have to repeat the steps again from the File Explorer on? (Steps 14 and on?) hmmm, is there a way to have the phone start up right into Android?

  4. hey, Ive placed the new 3.14 software on my phone, but when I open my storage card from my pc, there is no “android folder”. I have the correct ROM and radio. When the bootloader screen appears it says 2.08 spl…I previously flashed the phone. Is this causing the problem or what? and if so, how can I return to 3.03

Jayce help i have done all steps to install android and in the end instade of starting in android os it returned back to windows the oregenal one . i have spl 3,03 radio 2,15 and the rom its the last one so what to do ? i don wanna try to install or fallow any other instructions in other website coz i believe that urs is better and clear .

    I have the USA T-mobile HTC hd2 and I was making sure I had all the pre-reqs, I noticed that my SPL is only 2.10 how can I get it to 3.03? also my radio is 2.14 how do i get 2.15? Im a bit of a noob so I appologize would appreciate the help.

HI Jayce I installed the Android 2.2 Froyo it work fine but when I shut my phone off it wouldn’t let me boot CLRCAD’ or β€˜HARET’ again a error message keeps popping saying “the file cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found” I tried reinstalling but same result what do I need to do to get Android 2.2 Froyo working again

    I’ve got a T-mobile hd2 but now using it in China. This is my first time trying to change up os of my phone, i’ve gone through all your instructions as listed, the first time i booted android, it ran perfectly, but after restarting my phone and attempting again I get stuck on the black screen after i click haret. Any idea on what the problem might be? thanks in advance bro

      • Would deleted the current folder, and starting a new one require me to reset and redo the android setup? Oh, and since i have you here now, just wondering is flash included in android, if not then how do i install? Thanks!

            Apply this patch to prevent data corruption. If you already using this build, use a new data.img (any size) after you apply this patch.

    i only saw black/white and will appear to be frozen, the guide in that page do say to be patient, but i waited for more than 20 mins, still the same…

    I know how bussy you are is jst that when i make a call it would go through like i can’t hear nothing the other person is saying is there anything you can do about that because i wold a perricate it.Also, After the program was installed if i took out the barttery to look if it had a red spot when i put the battery back it will go back to windows is that normal?

      you can try couple of things

      *make sure you pressed clr.cad before pressing haret.exe
      *make sure you have prerequisites
      *try different builds to

      *try rebooting the phone

      yes everytime you restart the phone it boot into windows mobile first. that is normal

    All of your videos are informative and very helpful. Your work is appreciated. I have Tmobile USA HTC HD2 Sense and I have tried like 6 different ways to get Android on my phone. I just cant get it together. Can you post the link where I can uninstall HSPL and just get back to the original settings?     I installed the Android ROM. It’s working quite well, but when I used it the first time I got a clear voice by the one who answered my call. But the screen went to black unfortunately, so I couldn’t hang up. I pulled out the battery and started Android for the second time.

    After using Android the second time I called the same person, but now I heard a very bad voice. And the black screen again. Pulled out the battery again and rebooted.

    Each time I used CLRCAD.exe (and I always have to acknowledge it by pressing “OK”). So, that’s not the problem. I don’t know what the problem is with the bad voice, maybe I have to make some changes in the preferences?

    And what about the black screen while calling? I can’t return to the main menu…..

  41. Hi, i got hd2 spl 3.03, rom 3.14.405.2 (04666), radio 2.15.50.14. and i can’t install android. when i click on CLRCAD and the haret exe it start to boot, but only few lines, then it shows black screen and green htc logo appears and after it just restarts and turn on with windows mobile.
    please help!

  42. Hi there, why not use Android 2.8.1. I already have it running on my HTC HD2 and it works perfectly! And….The installation (which takes less than 10 minutes) is very simple and removes Winmo 6.5 completely:-) So, just turn on your HD2 and voila, Android it is! No booting, no CLRCAD, just Android! And for those who want to return to Winmo, no problem. Within 5 minutes you’re back where you started. But I don’t think you will. Greetings from Holland!

    I did ever thing as the instructions above mentioned, I successful upgraded 1.6 xx to 3.4xx rom, it worked fine. But when I went on to up grade to Adroid 2.2 frodo,every thing went well except the very last step after I selected CLRCAD and then HARET, after about 30 second booting up, it didn’t work with a new 2.2 Android operating system but it went back to original system, I still have no luck in this, can you please give me the advises and suggestions why this is not working for me?

        I have the 2G micro sd card, i don’t know if this is causing the problem. Other different thing i seen from my phone is when I pressed on CLRCAD , It gives me the warning like “The program is from an unknown publisher.Running it can possibly harm you device. Do you want to continue?
        Name: CLRCAD.EXE
        Location: \Storage Card\Android”
        From you video I did not see this warning message pops up when you selected CLRCAD.
        hmm something is not right with my phone?

        • Warning message is not an issue. How much space do you have in your SD card? Android ROM will create 1 GB or 512 MB data.img (I forgot which one) during 1st boot. So make sure that you have enough disk space for that.

  48. Hi Jayce, Thanks to your article on here, I had been running 2.2 using SD Card for months until last week, I see following message repeatedly on phone and I cant use it any more.

    The process anroid.process.acore has sopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

    Is there a way I can get SMS, MMS, contacts from data.img file or fix this error and use phone normally.

    Is there some thing I can do that this doesn’t happen again.

      • can i install like a few of the rom inside my SD card? just to make it as a theme, whenever i get bored, i could just change it πŸ˜€

        • Technically, yes. But it might have some issues between Android builds if the application store data on the same folder on your SD card. Data corruption might happen…

          • i can’t find any ‘media’ and ‘android’ folders in the android rom i downloaded. did i miss anything? tried the few last steps, my phone reboot, but it went back to windows. no android πŸ™

              • first i used HD2ONE. but now im using darkstone and it runs okay. but they can’t detect my memory card. i can’t view the pictures and music in my card. can you help me? thanks in advance. so much πŸ™‚

                • Hmm… You should be able to read SD card content since this Android ROM is running from SD card. Which program do you use to view the picture and music?

  55. yes, checked bootload comes up spl 0.72.000 and it is a sprint htc touch pro2 (will the hd2 posts also apply?-seems ive read more on the hd2 and i have wm 6.5 on my touch pro2). the closest i have found is that i may need to unlock the phone before i can install the any hardspl because of this spl. pls advise and thank you again

  65. hello jayce, I have a t-MOBILE htc hd2, I found out that the link for the darkstone froyo on this website is broken, can i install HD2ONE CyanogenMod 6.1.1 the same way as the video shown here?
